Checkmate (single release)

Happy Holidays (on the Dole!), Kittens!

I’m over the full moon to show you the cover art for my new holiday EP, “Holidays on the Dole!” and also to share with you one of the tracks, “Checkmate.” For those of you who adore a quirky waltz – hey, it’s one of those! And for those of you who hate chess metaphors – don’t worry, it isn’t one.

Adore this woeful holiday tale in health, kittens, and check back to on December 13 for the release of the full EP, “Holidays on the Dole!”

Love you, kittens,
Big Mama Birthday Boy Schlomo

englebert humperdinck

If you’ve told the same person more than once that young Englebert Humperdinck was attractive, you may have a problem. (My sincerest apologies to my very understanding boyfriend.)

In other news, I’ve got an album coming round in about a month. Exciting, non? I do hope you’ll pop back here to keep up and my comings and goings. To tempt you back, here’s the audio of the album’s first single, “(It’s True That I Don’t Buy Underwear) Because I’m Single.”

Love you, kittens,

Keep Waltzing

So, I might be moving back to Ann Arbor really, really soon. I can’t handle the excitement. So here’s a song I wrote while I was in college…basically, about going to college in Ann Arbor. Yep.

Keep Waltzing

Stevie Nicks

I noticed the other day that Silent Night was easier to deal with if you replaced all the words with “Stevie Nicks.”

Merry Nicksmas.

Stereo Total Tribute Mini Ep

Hey all,

Just a wee reminder that my holiday gift Stereo Total tribute mini ep (“Schlomo Sings Stereo Total”) will drop on December 11th. Which is also my 24th birthday. Jus’ sayin’. Check back to this site to download this free ep on that day.

Also, thanks for your big response to my essay on faggotry. A special thanks to Kate Bornstein for retweeting the link. It made for a surreal couple of days for this Michigan faggot folksinger.

Ok, I ❤ youse,
Big Mama Schlomo

The Ghosts Have Ears

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is the only holiday I truly love, and this year I’ve decided to honor with a tale of recording sessions and loves gone wrong.

Welcome to “The Ghosts Have Ears,” a song about my inability to record another song of mine (beloved by literally ones and ones of Schlomo Steel fans), “Ghosts of Ann Arbor.” It’s a song about several men I’ve been linked romantically to in the Washtenaw area. (As the song is nigh on two years old, it’s a touch out of date.)

Every time I attempt to record this song, something goes wrong. I get an uncontrollable coughing fit, I break multiple strings, my arthritis flares up – it is almost as though this song knows it exists and doesn’t want you to know.

Which brings us to today. Please visit the music section of this site or head on over to to download the song gratis (that’s fancy talk fer free), along with the demo for “The Ghosts Have Ears,” a reading of a never-released poem “Knocking” and a reading of the beloved Schlomo Steel short story, “The Confession.” “The Confession” is one of the eeriest Halloween tales ever told, about one of the greatest forces of evil known to modern man – dating me.

Love you, kittens,
Big Mama Schlomo
